On 29th of September 2007, “NPO Taketoyo”, one of Japanese NPO, conducted a project titled “YUMEHOTARU Lights of Beach” in Namatakura Village, Nadroga.
The project offered an opportunity to think about art, science and especially environment by making, using YUMEHOTARU, which means “Dream Firefly in” in Japanese.
YUMEHOTARU is a beautiful LED (Light Emitting Diode) illumination. Over 1,000 people participated to make more than 6,000 YUMEHOTARU for last two years. Comparing with the lamp, LED is five times more efficient in terms of energy consumption and lasts ten times longer than usual. Because of that, it can be said that LED is environmentally friendly. By making, working with and using YUMEHOTARU, people will be expected to be familiar with not only ideas of energy saving but also an idea of environmental issues in general.
The program of the day was remarkably successful. It was witnessed by Delegation from Taketoyo Town, including Mayor of the Town Mr. Momiyama, the Japanese Ambassador to Fiji H.E Masashi Namekawa, Students from the University of the South Pacific and more than 100 people of Namatakura community. The illumination of the YUMEHOTARU created fantastic atmosphere on the beach side of the Namatakura village and had invoked all the participants to think about environment in Fiji.
The students and community of Taketoyo Town, Namatakura Village and USP students collaborated in producing 3,000 brand new YUMEHOTARU. The YUMEHOTARU symbolized as a token of friendship between Fiji and Japan.
The “KID ECO MEETING” was held simultaneously while the YUMEHOTARU held in Namatakura Village. The children of Taketoyo Town discussed about what they learnt on the occasion of the event with children of Namatakura thorough satellite telephone system.
Because environmental issues such as sea level rising by climate change are really serious problems for the Pacific countries, NPO Taketoyo is planning to expand the project to all the Pacific Island Countries to develop friendship between Taketoyo Town and these all countries thorough this eco-friendly project.
