Embargo: Wednesday, 29th November 2006, 08.30 a.m

The Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance to the health sector, which benefits the citizens of the Republic of Vanuatu. The Port Vila Municipality will receive a new waste disposal truck funded under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The First Secretary, Mr. Shigeki Takaya, will represent H. E. Masashi Namekawa, the ambassador of Japan, in the official handover of the new garbage truck to the representative of the Port Vila Municipality.

The new garbage truck, worth US$70,108.00, will be used for the sanitary and safe cartage of household refuse from town area to the dumping site. It is anticipated that this project would encourage community participation in promoting clean and healthy environment.

Japan’s assistance to this project indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in the republic of Vanuatu and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties currently enjoyed by the governments and the peoples of Republic of Vanuatu and Japan.
