» Japan Provides New Hostel to Nawi Catholic Primary School

The Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance to the education sector, which benefits educational institutions in Fiji. The Nawi Catholic Primary School will celebrate the opening of new facilities that were funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Masashi Namekawa will be at Nawi Catholic Primary School in Nawi, Savusavu on Wednesday, 08th February 2006 at 12:00 noon to officially open a new school hostel building with furniture.

Nawi Catholic Primary School provides education from classes 1 to 8 to over 140 students from the surrounding areas of Dakuniba, Vunikura and Nawi. The difficulties faced by students in travelling to and from the school and the deteriorating conditions of the school’s old hostel complex had led to the request for a new hostel building. As such, the Government of Japan provided funding to build the new facilities. It is anticipated that approximately 80 students will use the hostel facilities.

The Government of Japan provided, under the GGP scheme, a grant of US$45,492.00 (approx. F$90,693.00) to the school to cover the construction costs for the new hostel block and the provision of new furniture.

Japan’s assistance to the school is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of prioritising projects that target the development of basic education in Fiji. The Government of Japan anticipates assisting more educational institutions in the Pacific Region in future.
