» Japan Provides New Classrooms to Varavu Muslim School

Embargo: Tuesday, 28th March 2006– 01:00 p.m.

The Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance to the education sector, which benefits educational institutions in Fiji. The Varavu Muslim School will celebrate the opening of new facilities that were funded under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The Minister Counsellor, Mr. Kenji Miyata, on behalf of the Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Masashi Namekawa, will be at Varavu Muslim School in Varavu, Ba on Tuesday, 28th March 2006 at 01:00 p.m. to officially open a new school building with three classrooms.

Varavu Muslim School is a multiracial school providing education from classes 1 to 8 to over 220 students from the surrounding areas of Varavu, Wailailai, Sorokoba, Nadhari, Bilolo, Lausa, Natunuku, Vatia, Tagitagi and part of Waikona, Tavua. The deteriorating condition of the existing classrooms had led to the request for additional classrooms by the school management. As such, the Government of Japan provided funding to build the new facilities.

The Government of Japan under the GGP scheme provided a grant of US$43,145.00 (approx. F$71,500.00) to the school to cover the construction costs for the three classrooms block and the provision of new school furniture.

Japan’s assistance to the school is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of prioritising projects that target the development of basic education in Fiji. The Government of Japan anticipates assisting more educational institutions in the Pacific Region in future.
