Embargo: Friday 8th September 2006, 10:00 a.m.
The Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance to the education sector, which benefits educational institutions in Fiji. The Vunimono High School will celebrate the opening of facilities that were funded under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) programme.
H.E. Mr. Masashi Namekawa, the Ambassador of Japan, will on Thursday, 7th September 2006 at 10.00 a.m. officially open the eight new classrooms building at Vunimono High School
Vunimono High School is the largest multiracial school in the Nausori District providing education from form 3 to 7 and vocational studies to around 1100 students from the surrounding areas. The school had faced problem of shortage of classrooms following old classrooms being declared unsafe by Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Department.
The Government of Japan, under the GGP scheme, provided a grant of US$78,598.00 (approx. F$133,000.00) to the school to cover for the building materials and construction costs for the 8 classrooms to assist the school in solving the problem of classroom shortages. The provision of the new facilities will ensure that the school meets the safety standard of Fiji Authorities in providing the education to the many students who have been using the old facilities.
Japan’s assistance to the school is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of prioritising projects that target the development of basic education in Fiji. The Government of Japan anticipates assisting more educational institutions in the future.
