» Japan Provides Assistance to Water Project and Itoin Mainiku High School

The Government of Japan will provide funding of US$93,081.00 to Tabwakea Village in Christmas Island and Itoin Mainiku High School through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme.

The Second Secretary at the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Hiroshi Watanabe, and the representatives of the each recipient organisation will sign grant contracts to formalise Japan’s funding at 7.00 p.m. on 8th March 2007 at Captain Cook Hotel, Christmas Island, Kiribati.

Details of each project are as follows:

  1. Tabwakea Village Water Project
    Government of Japan will provide for provision of a complete water supply facility including construction of overhead water tank stands, water tanks, pipe works and installation of one tap per household, worth US$43,935.00, to Tabwakea village in Christmas Island. This project will assist in Ministry of Line and Phoenix Island Development’s efforts to alleviate the current severe water problem in rural areas. The New water supply facility will help ease the chronic water problem situation in Tabwakea which has approximately 25 households and will help the villagers to access fresh tap water promptly for drinking, and other daily activities.

  2. Itoin Mainiku High School
    The Government of Japan will provide funding of US$49,146 under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme to Itoin Mainiku High School. The project comprises of construction of a library block and provision of school furniture to assist the school in acquiring a well resourced library and solving the problem of obsolete and shortages of furniture due to growing demand from scholars of nearby areas..

Japan’s assistance to these projects indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in the Republic of Kiribati and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties currently enjoyed by the governments and the peoples of the republic of Kiribati and Japan.
