» Japan Provides Assistance to Luganville Municipality and Primary School Projects in Luganville in the Republic of Vanuatu
The Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance to the environment and education sectors, which benefits the citizens of the Republic of Vanuatu. The Luganville Municipality will receive a new waste disposal truck whilst Kamewa English Primary School will celebrate the opening of new facilities, both projects funded under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.
The Ambassador of Japan, H. E. Mr. Masashi Namekawa, will officially handover the new garbage truck to the representative of the Luganville Municipality in Luganville Municipal Town Hall and commemorate the opening of two (2) classrooms block with provision of furniture in Kamewa English Primary School on Wednesday, 27th January, 2007.
Details of each project are as follows:
- Luganville Municipality - The Government of Japan provides a new garbage truck, worth US$82.505.00, that will be used for the sanitary and safe cartage of household refuse from town area to the dumping site. It is anticipated that this project would encourage community participation in promoting clean and healthy environment.
- Kamewa English Primary School - The Government of Japan under the GGP scheme provided a total grant of US$49,648.00 to the school to cover the construction costs for the 2 classrooms block and the provision of new school furniture for the students and teachers. The school provides education to children from the surrounding villages of its respective locations. The need for the new facilities was to ensure that the students are provided with better learning environment in the school.
Along with Kamewa English Primary School, the Government of Japan had provided funding assistance for projects to six other schools in Luganville area and is very hopeful for successful completion of projects in these schools soon.
Japan’s assistance to these projects indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in the Republic of Vanuatu and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties currently enjoyed by the governments and the peoples of Republic of Vanuatu and Japan.
