Handing Over Ceremony for “The Project for Water Supply to Navunivesi Settlement and Malabi Village” under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.
2025/10/3

On 3 October 2025, First Secretary Mr. Ryota TERAI officially handed over a water supply system to Navunivesi Settlement and Malabi Village, in the presence of representatives from the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF). The project was implemented under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), as part of the “Project for Improvement of Water Supply in Navunivesi Settlement and Malabi Village”.
Prior to the commencement of the project, both communities faced serious challenges due to inadequate water infrastructure. An existing water supply system was unable to meet the demand of these communities, and the residents were compelled to bathe and wash in nearby rivers, resulting in frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases and poor sanitation.
In response to these challenges, the Government of Japan provided assistance totaling approximately FJD 154,000. The project included the construction of an intake dam, a cement water tank, water pipes, a water purification system and shared water taps. In addition, a water management committee was established, and training sessions were conducted to enable the residents to manage and maintain the facilities by themselves.
The newly installed system is expected to ensure a safe and stable water supply for both communities, contributing to improved living conditions and public health.
During the ceremony, Mr. Terai expressed his sincere appreciation to all those involved and remarked, “I am confident that this project will contribute to building a brighter future for the people of these villages and further strengthen the bonds of friendship between the peoples of Fiji and Japan.”
