On 25 September 2024, H.E Mr. Rokuichiro MICHII, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Fiji, and the Honourable Ms. Alitia Bainivalu,Minister for Fisheries and Forestry of the Republic of Fiji, signed an Exchange of Notes for the “Provision of Fishing Research Vessel and Ice Making Machines to the Ministry of Fisheries” funded under Japan’s Economic and Social Development Programme
This cooperation will support the fisheries sector in Fiji by providing fishing research and monitoring vessel for stock assessments, to aid in the development of new fishing methods and for the implementation of monitoring and surveillance activities to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This initiative also includes the provision of ice-making machines, aimed at improving the profitability of local fishermen and enhancing the sustainability of the fishing industry, which is vital to Fiji's economy.
