Commemorative Ceremony/Cultural Event on the Occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Fiji

   On 22 October 2020, the Commemorative Ceremony/Cultural Event was held at Japan-Pacific ICT Center at the University of the South Pacific (USP) in Suva on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Republic of Fiji.

   At the welcoming address, H.E. Mr. OMURA Masahiro, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Fiji, highlighted the 50 years of bilateral history from the perspectives such as the Pacific Islands Leaders Meetings (PALM) held since 1997 and Fiji’s significant role in it, active people-to-people exchanges, Japan’s official development assistance (ODA) worth more than 500 million US Dollars to date. H.E. Mr. OMURA also mentioned its importance of cooperation to create better Asia Pacific region based on the Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision. On behalf of the Fijian government, Hon. Semi Tuleca Koroilavesau, Minister for Fisheries made his remarks in which he highlighted the bilateral bonds of many years, recognized Japan’s development cooperation for Fiji to date, and looked forward to working with Japan in solidifying the ties.

   After the two speeches, H.E. Mr. NAKANISHI Satoshi, Parliamentary Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan and Mr. NUKAGA Fukushiro, Member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of Japan-Fiji Parliamentary Friendship League joined the ceremony by congratulatory video messages for this occasion. DRUM TAO, a Japanese drum group, commemorated this occasion with their screening of cultural performances and captivating beats of traditional Japanese drums as well as the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Band did with their Fijian and Japanese musical performances.
