Japan Provides Assistance to the Government of Tuvalu (the Project for Improvement of Education Facilities at Motufoua Secondary School)

The Government of Tuvalu will receive grant assistance in the sum of approximately JPY 692 million (approx. AUD 8.6 million) from the Government of Japan for the project for improvement of education facilities at Motofoua Secondary School in Tuvalu. The funding will be sourced from Japan’s Grant Aid (GA) scheme.
The ceremony of the Exchange of Notes for this assistance will be held in Funafuti, at 10.00 a.m. on 24th August 2011, where Hon. Apisai Ielemia, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Government of Tuvalu, and H.E. Yutaka Yoshizawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Tuvalu, will sign and exchange notes formalising Japan’s commitment towards the project.
The assistance had materialised from the request by the Government of Tuvalu. The main purpose of the Grant Aid (GA) assistance is to generally renovate Motofoua Secondary School’s, the only Secondary school in Tuvalu, existing facilities and construct new ones to accommodate the increasing number of students around Tuvalu acquiring secondary education. The Government of Japan assisted Motofoua Secondary school in 1996 to build additional classrooms, teacher’s quarters and dormitory facilities. This Grant Aid will include construction of 10 new classrooms, special classrooms, 10 new teachers’ quarters, administration building, dormitory for boys and girls, Gymnasium, Multi-purpose hall, tennis, volleyball & basketball courts and procurement of library, medical, administration, kitchen and ICT equipment.This GA is an added milestone in Japan’s ongoing support and cooperation towards the development and prosperity of Pacific Island Countries including Tuvalu and it is anticipated that the friendly ties between the Governments and the people of Japan and Tuvalu will continue to strengthen.
