Bilateral Relations »Japan's Economic Cooperation between Japan and the Republic of the Fiji Island »The Objective of Japan’s ODA to Fiji

Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy has been strengthened over the years to address new development challenges that developing countries faced.

The objective of Japan’s ODA is to contribute to the peace and development of the international community and thereby to help ensure Japan’s own security and prosperity. Japan has utilized its ODA to actively support economic and social infrastructure development, human resource development and institution building in the developing countries.

Japan’s development assistance to the Pacific island countries in 2007 was approximately US$70.29 million of which around 8 percent was allocated to the Republic of the Fiji Islands alone. Being the major recipient, the Republic of the Fiji Islands received around US$5.75 million for 2007 (Source: Japan’s ODA White Paper 2008, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan) with US$6.78 million as technical cooperation and US$-1.03 (amount repaid) million as loan aid. Japan has over the years provided assistance to big projects and small grassroots projects in Fiji and is planning to expand its assistance in the priority sectors across the nation in its effort to promote economic development for a more robust and prosperous Fiji.
