Sacred Heart High School received over 60,000 AUS dollars to construct a Science Laboratory from Japan, under the GGP program, Grant assistance for grassroots Human Security Program. Since the school did not have a proper laboratory, students had to travel to other nearby school to borrow their facility to carry out science experiment classes. In most cases because of difficulties for science teachers to make arrangements for usage of laboratories, students conducted experimental classes during off-school hours such as after school or Saturdays. With new science laboratory at their own school will be encouraged by the students to achieve academic excellence.

Japan’s assistance through this program indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of the people of Kiribati. The GGP programme is designed to address basic human needs, which include health, basic education, water supply, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. It is also in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level.
