Japan Assists Kiritimati Health centre and Poland Primary School in Kiribati

The Government of Japan will provide funds totalling US$89,989.00 (approx. AU$ 96,094) for two (2) projects in Kiritimati Island, Kiribati. The funding will be made available through the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.
Grant Contracts formalising Japan’s assistance will be signed between the representatives of the respective projects and Mr. Tatsushi Matsuo, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan to Vanuatu, at 10.30 a.m. on 31st October 2007 at Kiritimati Island, Kiribati.

Kiritimati Health Centre is the only health Centre with Doctors in the Line & Phoenix Islands Group. The new X-ray Unit will facilitate an effective and efficient medical service delivery by medical personnel to the patients. Poland Primary is said to be the only school in the group, built in 1975, to cater for students from the south sea area. The buildings are old and need to be replaced to allow an equal opportunity for the community of Poland to learn.
Japan’s assistance to these projects indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in Kiritimati Island and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include health, basic education, water supply, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure.
It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties between the governments and the people of Kiribati and Japan.
