Press Release No. 40 / 2010

Date: Thursday, 11th November, 2010

The Government of Japan has been continuously and very generously donating grants for major capital development projects to schools in desperate need throughout Fiji. The community of Bishop Kempthorne Memorial School in Nasinu witnessed the handing-over of the newly constructed three classrooms and a seven pan toilet block funded by the Government of Japan under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Takeshi Tanabe represented the Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa in the official handing-over ceremony of three new classrooms and seven-pan toilet block at Bishop Kempthorne Memorial School to be held at 10.00 am on Friday, 12th November, 2010.

Japan provided funding assistance of F$182,000.00 (approx. US$96,460.00) for construction of three new classrooms and a seven-pan toilet block to Bishop Kempthorne Memorial School. The School was established in 1969, and accommodates 557 children from nearby HART settlement and villages. The new classroom complex will replace the old wooden and corrugated structured building presently utilised by children. The new seven-pan toilet block will be an addition to the present toilet facilities, which has been deteriorating due to its heavy usage, and also improve the pupil-toilet ratio at the School.  The new classrooms will allow the School Authority to relocate children into permanent classrooms from overcrowded and deteriorated classrooms currently occupied and thereby, ensuring best of resources for children of this semi-rural school to excel academically. The new classrooms will also provide an equal and competent learning opportunity to the 557 children attending the school.

Japan believes education is the key to socio-economic development and hopes to continue assisting schools in Fiji through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects programme (GGP).
