Press Release No: 38 / 2009
Date: Friday, 25th September 2009, 3.00 p.m.
The Government of Japan provides assistance worth $410,410.00 to Rishikul Primary School, Rishikul Nadera Primary School and Koronubu Indian School through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme.
Charge d’ Affaires at the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Takeshi Tanabe signed the grant contracts with Dr. Vijay Nair, the Chairman of Board of Governors for Rishikul Maha Sabha, Fiji, Mr. Amirka Prasad, the Head Teacher of Rishikul Nadera Primary School and Mr. Mohammed Hanif, the Trustee of Koronubu Indian School, to formalise Japan’s funding assistance to the three schools. The signing ceremony was hosted by the Embassy of Japan in its conference room, at 3.00 p.m. on Friday 25th September 2009.
Details of each project are as follows:
Japan provided funding assistance of $151,000.00, for construction of a new classroom, library and an ablution block to Rishikul Primary School. The School was established in 1931, and boasts to be the “Pride and Spirit of Nasinu” with school roll over one thousand two hundred. The new classroom complex will enable the school to relocate children from an overcrowded temporary classroom erected by partitioning the library to accommodate the increasing number of children entering the Rishikul School, and also make way to extend for a fully-fledged library facility. The new seven-pan toilet will ease the pressure on the usage of current toilet facilities, and improve the pupil-toilet ratio at the School. With the formalisation of this project today, there is renewed hope for the children of Nasinu, as they have been provided with a better opportunity for learning and achieving academic success. |
Japan also provided funding assistance worth $120,710.00 to Rishikul Nadera Primary School, for construction of one classroom, a library and for provision of furniture to help establish a proper library facility in the school and ease the difficulties faced by students and teachers, generally associated with overcrowded classrooms due to shortage of rooms. The new classroom will empower Rishikul Nadera Primary School to expand size of classrooms presently partitioned to accommodate 360 students attending the school mainly from Nadera, Nadawa and Kinoya. This School was established in 1977 and had faced shortage of adequate classroom space to cater for the increasing children intake and has in its possession approximately 6000 library books currently stacked away in shelves and boxes. |
Koronubu Indian School in Ba also received a grant of $138,700.00 from the Government of Japan to construct three-classroom building complex. The new classrooms will replace the old wooden classrooms built in 1930’s when the school was established to provide basic primary education to the community of Koronubu, Benai, Nakavika, Nabatolu, Field 11, Korovuto, and Namada villages. The new classrooms will empower this rural based school with modern classrooms to ensure that children of this farming community in Ba are provided with best of resources and equal opportunities to excel academically. This School over the years faced financial difficulties in renovating the old wooden deteriorated building to accommodate the 165 children attending the school.
