Japan Assists Labasa Hospital with New Medical Equipment

The Government of Japan continues to provide funding assistance for upgrading of basic health facilities around Fiji. Labasa Hospital received new modern medical equipment for the Physiotherapy Department funded under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The Second Secretary at the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Yoshihiro Toyomitsu represented the Ambassador of Japan, His Excellency Yutaka Yoshizawa at Labasa Hospital in Vanua Levu on Thursday, 29th October, 2009, at 1.45 p.m. to officially hand-over the new medical equipment that will empower the Physiotherapy Department with modern equipment suitable to provide best treatment to patients of the Northern Division.

US$33,666.00 worth of medical equipment was provided to the Physiotherapy Department. The modern medical equipment includes ultrasonic therapy apparatus, traction unit, cycle ergo meters, mat platforms and hydro collator heating units. This new set of equipment will improvise the hospital’s ability to provide excellent physiotherapy services to the people of Northern Division. The project will not only replace the old equipment currently being used by patients, but also provide ultrasonic therapy apparatus and traction unit that was lacking at the hospital’s Physiotherapy Department, which will ensure the availability of effective and efficient physiotherapy treatment for the people in the Northern Division.

In an effort to promote and encourage development in this very important sector, Japan decided to offer assistance to health sector with the view to allow people of Fiji to have access to modern equipments. Japan believes a good health system will eventually assist in nation building in the future. Japan understands the high costs involved in providing an efficient health system and has prioritised funding assistance in such sectors where everyone has equal access and opportunity for treatment. This assistance is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties currently enjoyed by the governments and the peoples of the Fiji Islands and Japan.
