Japan Provides Funding Assistance for Water Project at Nalebaleba Village, Sigatoka

The Government of Japan granted financial assistance for village water supply Project in Fiji under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme. The people of Nalebaleba village in the upper Valley road in Sigatoka celebrated the handing-over ceremony for provision of a complete water supply facility including construction of two 10,000 liters concrete water tanks, pipe works and construction of fence around the water catchments area, worth US$83,398.00 that was funded under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme. This is the second water project in Sigatoka funded by Japan in its last fiscal year April 2008 to March 2009.
The First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Tatsushi Matsuo represented the Ambassador of Japan, His Excellency Yutaka Yoshizawa at Nalebaleba village in Valley road, Sigatoka on Friday, 19th June, 2009 at 12.00 p.m. to officially hand-over the new water facilities that marked the beginning of a new era in the lives of the people of Nalebaleba.
The new water supply system will certainly enable the 2000 people of Nalebaleba village to enjoy modern and hygienic facilities, in particular flush toilet and shower amenities which minimise health related and environmental risks. The New water supply facility will also ensure ample regular supply of tap water for daily use for all villagers and, bring development and improvement in the lives of everyone in the village.
Japan’s assistance to this project indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in Fiji and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training and rural infrastructure. It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties between the people of Fiji and Japan.
