Press Release No: 43/2009
Date: Thursday, 28th October 2009 – 10.30 a.m.
The Government of Japan continues to provide funding assistance for upgrading of basic school facilities around Fiji. Valebasoga Secondary School community witnessed the official handing-over of a new three classroom building block with 50 sets of student desk and chair and footpath on 29th October, 2009. The funding of this major project at Valebasoga Secondary School is made available through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.
The Second Secretary at the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Yoshihiro Toyomitsu represented the Ambassador of Japan, His Excellency Yutaka Yoshizawa at Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa on Thursday, 29th October, 2009, at 10.30 a.m. to officially hand-over the new building complex that empowered the school with new classrooms conducive to teaching and learning environment.
Japan provided funding assistance worth US$87,659.00 to Valebasoga Secondary School for construction of a new three-classroom building complex. Valebasoga Secondary School was established in 1991 and is a multiracial school providing education from forms 1 to 7 with vocational education franchised from the Fiji Institute of Technology. Currently the school accommodates over 290 students from the outskirts of Vanua Levu including Bua, Cakaudrove and Natewa Bay. The new building complex will accommodate children housed temporarily in Valebasoga Public School after facing shortage of classrooms due to the extensive damages sustained from the fire earlier in the year. Therefore, upon request, the Government of Japan provided funding for the construction of the new building.
Japan’s assistance to the school is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy objective of prioritising projects that target the development of basic education facilities in Fiji. The Government of Japan anticipates assisting more grassroots project in Fiji in future.
