Japan Assists Toga District School with Two New Classrooms, One Library with Furniture
Embargo: Wednesday, 20th May 2009 – 11.00 a.m.
The Government of Japan continues to assist schools for upgrading of basic educational facilities around Fiji. Today, Toga District School community witnessed the official handing-over of a new three classroom building block with furniture and fully restored old classrooms funded by the Government of Japan. The funding of this major project at Toga District School was made available through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.
The Ambassador of Japan, His Excellency Yutaka Yoshizawa at Toga District School in Nausori on Wednesday, 20th May, 2009, at 11.00 a.m. officially handed-over the new building complex and refurbished classrooms that will improve the classroom facilities used by students in the past.
Toga District School was established in 1942 and the school’s wooden building structure had deteriorated over the years. The new classrooms will replace the old teacher’s quarter built in 1942, currently being occupied by children due to shortage of classrooms. The new library will ensure children have a well resourced information centre with books to acquire knowledge through research work and improve their reading, writing and speaking skills. This School also faced difficulties in providing adequate proper classroom space in accommodating 156 children attending the school from nearby areas including Navatuyaba, Vunisei and Muana villages.
The Government of Japan, under the GGP scheme provided a grant of US$74952.00 to the school to cover for the building materials and construction costs for the three classrooms, furniture and restoration works. In the last fiscal year, Japan has provided 14 projects under its GGP scheme with a total value of approximately 1 million US dollars around Fiji Islands, and among these, 9 projects were for education sector alone with total funding of approximately 700 thousand US dollars. This is the 5th project completed and handed over successfully.
Japan’s assistance to the school is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy objective of prioritising projects that target the development of basic education facilities in Fiji. The Government of Japan anticipates assisting more grassroots project in Fiji in future.
