Japan Assists Saint John Bosco Primary School with ThreeNew Classrooms and Furniture

Friday, 31st July, 2009

Press Release No. : 33 / 2009

The Government of Japan has been continuously assisting schools around Fiji through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme. The community of Nepani, Nadawa and Narere in Nasinu will witness the handing-over ceremony of three new classrooms and furniture funded by the Government of Japan under its GGP programme.

The First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Tatsushi Matsuo will represent the Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa in the official handing-over ceremony of the three new classrooms and provision of furniture at Saint John Bosco Primary School to be held at 10.00 am on Friday, 31st July, 2009.

Japan provided funding assistance worth US$86,229.00 (appox. F$157,500.00) to Saint John Bosco Primary School in Nasinu, for construction of three classrooms to ease the difficulties off students and teachers, generally associated with overcrowded classrooms due to shortage of rooms, and provision of 145 chairs and 18 infant tables (awarded in October, 2008). The new classrooms will empower Saint John Bosco Primary School to expand of classes one, two and three streams, and thereby, offer quality education facilities to the increasing number of children attending the school. This School was established in 1981, and had lately faced shortage of adequate classroom space to cater for 740 children attending the school from the densely populated Nadera, Nadawa and Narere corridor.

The Government of Japan believes that by providing assistance directly to schools in Fiji will not only ensure effective use of grant, but also achieve Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy objective of promoting development at the grassroots level. Japan acknowledges education is the key to socio-economic development and hopes to continue assisting schools in Fiji through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects programme (GGP). It is hoped that this assistance will strengthen the friendly ties enjoyed by the Governments and the people of Japan and Fiji Islands.
