Speech for the Handing Over Ceremony of a New Library and a Classroom Waidra Muslim Primary School
Speech by Mr. Hiroyuki Orikasa, the Counsellor, Embassy of Japan, 25th November 2008, 10.00 a.m.Project Title:
- The Project for Upgrading of Waidra Muslim Primary School
Good morning, Namaste Salaam and Ni Sa Bula
It is my pleasure to be here this morning to officially hand over the new library and classroom to Waidra Muslim Primary School. Today’s handing-over ceremony also coincides with the school’s annual prize giving function and, I am honoured to be given the opportunity to present awards to the hardworking students of Waidra Muslim Primary School. I also wish to express my sincere gratitude for your kind hospitality and the warm welcome accorded to me this morning.
This project was undertaken in recognition of the challenges faced by the Waidra Community in ensuring adequate facilities for accommodating the increasing number of students enrolling at Waidra Muslim Primary School. I strongly hope that the donation of a library, a classroom, and relevant furniture will greatly assist the School in its effort to promote a conducive environment and provide an equal learning opportunity to the children of Waidra. I also hope that this new library will encourage the children of Waidra to make a habit of reading and learning more.
This donation was funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme (GGP Programme). Under the GGP Programme, Japan provides grants at the grassroots level in areas such as basic education, sanitary environment, water supply, health, vocational training and rural infrastructure. Last year, Japan provided a total of US$936,256 for fifteen successful projects in various locations within Fiji under this scheme. These projects are a reflection of Japan’s goodwill and friendship with the people of Fiji.
Ladies and gentlemen, before I conclude, I wish to shed some light on the importance of the annual prize giving day. This is one of the very important events in the school calendar for the teachers, pupils, and parents. Today’s function not only recognises the achievements of hardworking and dedicated students, but, also reflects the teachers’ ability to prepare and put across the the knowledge in their teaching lessons to the children. It is therefore, my humble plea to all those who may have not put in their best effort this year to continue to work hard and, let not this occasion discourage you from being rewarded next year. To those who will be rewarded today, my congratulations for your success in this academic year, and, I hope that you will continue to work with sheer determination next year.
Ladies and Gentlemen, with these few words, I will now officially handover the new library and classroom to the Waidra Muslim Primary School.
Thank you very much, Dhanyevaad, and Vinaka Vakalevu.
