Speech for the Handing Over Ceremony of Seaqaqa Central College Project

Speech by Mr. Hiroyuki Orikasa Counsellor, Embassy of Japan, 10.00 a.m. 22nd April, 2008
Project Title:

Good morning to you all

I am delighted to join in this handing-over ceremony and thank you for your generous hospitality and the warm welcome accorded to me this morning.

Science is an increasingly important subject to master, and students must have access to state-of-the-art classrooms in order to meet high learning standards. Science lessons can be most engaging when they involve hands-on experiments. Students should participate in a range of lab activities to verify known scientific concepts, pose research questions, conceive their own investigations, and create models of natural phenomena.
It was for this reason that Japan, through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme, decided to assist with provision of a science laboratory to Seaqaqa Central College students in order to give them experience with the processes of science.
It is therefore my humble request to all stakeholders of this school to ensure maintenance of this science laboratory as an ongoing activity designed to keep the education function and environment of this school at peak efficiency.

Japan prioritises its assistance in improving educational facilities for national growth and development, and as such, this project is a testimony of Japan’s initiatives to improve the standard of education of the people of Fiji. Japan’s commitment to education sector has resulted in Seaqaqa district with Seaqaqa Indian and Muslim Primary Schools also receiving donations from the Government of Japan recently.

To conclude, this new science laboratory is the evident manifestation of the firm friendship between the people and governments of Japan and that of the Fiji Islands.

With these few words, I officially declare the new science laboratory open to the students of Seaqaqa to enhance their learning in the science curriculum.

Thank you
