» Japan Provides Funds to Water Supply Project in the Republic of Vanuatu

The Government of Japan is pleased to announce the approval of grants totalling US$81,947 for water supply project in the Republic of in Vanuatu. The funding will be made available through the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The Grant Contracts, formalizing Japan’s assistance, were signed between the recipient organisations and Mr. Shigeki Takaya, the First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, on Thursday 30th November 2006 at the Department of Foreign Affairs office in the Republic of Vanuatu.

Japan’s assistance to these projects indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in the Republic of Vanuatu and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. A total of 46 projects to the value of approximately US$1,759,679 have been funded under this program from 1996 to 2005 in the Republic of Vanuatu. 13 projects to the value of US$633,676 were funded in the Japanese financial year of 2005 in the Republic of Vanuatu. The Government of Japan had provided funding assistance for 3 projects to the value of US$145,002 in Vanuatu early this year.

It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen friendly ties between the governments and the people of Vanuatu and Japan.
