Embargo: Wednesday, 30th November 2006, 11.00 a.m
The Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance to the education sector, which benefits educational institutions in Fiji. The Saraswati Primary Manoca School will celebrate the ground breaking ceremony of a new building that was funded under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.
The Second Secretary, Ms. Reiko Konosu, will represent H. E. Mr. Masashi Namekawa, the Ambassador of Japan, at Saraswati Primary Manoca School in Nausori on Thursday, 30th November 2006 at 11.00 a.m. in the official ground breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction works at the school.
Saraswati Primary Manoca School is a multiracial school providing education from classes 1 to 8 to over 320 students from the surrounding areas of Nausori. The school building was constructed in the early 1900’s and has been the target for robbery and recently, a case of arson. The school mostly caters for students of disadvantaged families. It faced shortage of classrooms and lacked modern school furniture and an ablution block. Therefore, upon request, the Government of Japan provided funding to build the new buildings.
The Government of Japan, under the GGP scheme provided a grant of US$67,665.00 (approx.F$115,000.00), to the school to cover for the building materials and construction costs for the classroom and ablution block and provision of study desks and chairs.
Japan’s assistance to the school is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of prioritising projects that target the development of basic education in Fiji. The Government of Japan anticipates assisting more educational institutions in the Pacific Region in future.
