Japanese Government Scholarships 2011 Intake

The Government of Japan offers 4 categories of scholarships under-mentioned to qualified Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu, Vanuatu citizens for study in Japan.

A. RESEARCH STUDENT (POSTGRADUATE)

Fields of Study: Must be an area which applicants will be able to study and research at Japanese universities. Study field must be in the same or a related field as the applicant has studied in his/her university. Students who majors in medicine, dentistry or welfare science will not be allowed to engage in clinical training such as medical care and operative surgery until he/she has obtained a permit from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare under applicable Japanese laws.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicants must be University graduates and under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2010. Born on and after April 2, 1976.
  2. Study area must be in the same or a related field as the applicant has studied.
  3. Those who are eager to learn the Japanese language and receive instructions in Japanese.
  4. More information on application procedures can be obtained from the information leaflet provided by the Embassy.

Term of Scholarship:
The term of scholarship may differ depending on what course a grantee takes in Japan. Those who wish to enter Master’s or Doctor’s degree course of a graduate school should meet the requirements set by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Japan.


 

B. UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT (Degree course)

Fields of Study:

Fields of Study:
1). (a) Social Science and Humanities - A:  Laws, Politics, Pedagogy, Sociology, Literature, History, Japanese Language and others. (Note:  Applicants who wish to major in the fields categories as “Others” may have difficulties in finding universities that can accept them).

(b) Social Science and Humanities – B:  Economics and Business Administration

2). (a) Natural Science - A: Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), Electric & Electronic Studies (Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Information Engineering), Mechanical Studies (Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture), Civil Engineering & Architecture (Civil Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Engineering), Chemical Studies (Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Textile Engineering), and other fields (Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Biotechnology).

  (b) Natural Science – B:  Agricultural Studies (Agriculture, Agricultural Chemistry, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Forestry, Food Science, Fisheries), Hygienic studies (Pharmacy, Hygienic, Nursing) and Science (Biology)

 

Eligibility:
1.      Born between April 2, 1989 and April 1, 1994.
2.      For Fiji Citizens:  Those who have passed Fiji School Leaving Certificate with over 80% average marks, having passed in subjects relevant to the area of study.
3.      For Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu, Vanuatu Citizens: Those who have passed year 12 external examination in their respective country with good marks.
4.   Those who are willing to study and receive university education in Japanese language.

Term of Scholarship:
Five years from April 2011 including the one-year preparatory education in the Japanese language, except for those majoring in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Pharmacy, whose term of scholarship is six or seven years respectively.

 

C.COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY STUDENT (Advanced Diploma)

Fields of Study: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Information, Communication and Network Engineering, Materials Engineering, Architecture and Civil Engineering and Maritime Engineering.

Eligibility:
1.      Born between April 2, 1989 and April 1, 1994.
2.      For Fiji Citizens:  Those who have passed Fiji School Leaving Certificate with over 70% average marks, having passed in subjects relevant to the area of study.
3.     For Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu, Vanuatu Citizens:  Those who have passed year 12 external examination in their respective country with good marks.
4.      Those who are willing to study and receive education in Japanese language.

Term of Scholarship:
Four years from April 2011 including one-year preparatory education in the Japanese language, except for those majoring in Maritime Engineering, whose term of scholarship is four and half years.


N.B.:  If a scholarship grantee graduates from a college of technology and is admitted for enrolment in an advanced course at a college of technology or university as a junior transferee, he/she may have the term of his/her scholarship extended upon successful results in the Diploma examination results given by MEXT, provided that he/she has outstanding academic achievement that meets certain criteria.

 

D.SPECILIZED TRAINING COLLEGE STUDENT (Diploma Course)

Fields of Study: Technology, Personal Care & Nutrition, Education and Welfare, Business, Fashion and Home Economics, Culture and General Education and Other fields.

Eligibility:
1.             Born between April 2, 1989 and April 1, 1994.
2.           For Fiji Citizens:  Those who have passed Fiji School Leaving Certificate with good results.
3.          For Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu, Vanuatu Citizens:  Those who have passed year 12 external examination in their respective country with good marks.
3.           Those who are willing to study Japanese language and receive education in Japanese language.

Term of Scholarship:
Three years from April 2011 including one year preparatory education in the Japanese language. 
N.B.:  If a scholarship grantee graduates from a specialized training college and is admitted to a Japanese university as a junior transferee, he/she may have the term of his/her scholarship extended upon successful examination results given by MEXT, provided that he/she has outstanding academic achievement that meets certain criteria.

  • Applications can only be made for one course, in only one scholarship category.

*        Applicants who wish to receive application forms by mail must forward self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Embassy.  It is important to specify which particular scholarship program, the applicant desire.

*        Completed application forms should either be sent or handed to the Embassy by 18 June 2010.  Late applications will not be considered.  All the documents submitted will not be returned.

*        Selected candidates for examinations/interviews will be notified by phone in July 2010. Examinations and interviews will be held at the Embassy around the mid August 2010.

*        Past years’ examination papers are available for reference at the Embassy.
