The Government of Japan offers 4 kinds of scholarships undermentioned to qualified Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu citizens for study in Japan.
A. RESEARCH STUDENT (POSTGRADUATE)
Fields of Study: Must be subjects which applicants will be able to study and research at Japanese universities. Students who majors in medicine, dentistry or welfare science will not be allowed to engage in clinical training such as medical care and operative surgery until he/she obtains a permit from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare under applicable Japanese laws. Majors in traditional entertainment such as Kabuki and classical Japanese dances, or in subjects that seek practical training in specific technologies or techniques at factories or companies are excluded.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must be University graduates and under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2008. Born on and after April 2, 1973.
- Study area must be in the same or a related field as the applicant has studied.
- Those who are eager to learn the Japanese language and receive instructions in Japanese.

Term of Scholarship:
The term of scholarship may differ depending on what course a grantee takes in Japan. Those who wish to enter Master’s or Doctor’s degree course of a graduate school should meet the requirements set by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Japan.
B. UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT (Degree course)
Fields of Study:
- Social Science and Humanities: Laws, Politics, Pedagogy, Sociology, Literature, History, Japanese Language, Economics, Business Administration.
- Natural Science: Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) Electric & Electronic Studies, Mechanical Studies, Civil Engineering & Architecture, Chemical Studies, Metallurgical, Mining and Maritime Engineering, Biotechnology, Agricultural Studies, Hygienic Studies, Science (Biology), Medicine and Dentistry.
Eligibility:
- Born between April 2, 1986 and April 1, 1991.
- Those who are willing to study the Japanese language and receive university education in the Japanese language.
- For Fiji Citizen:
Those who have passed Fiji School Leaving Certificate with over 75% average marks, having passed in subjects relevant to the area of study. - For Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu Citizens:
Those who have passed year 12 external examination in their respective country with good marks.
Term of Scholarship:
Five years from April 2008 including the one-year preliminary instruction in the Japanese language, except for those majoring in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or six years course in Pharmacy, whose term of scholarship is seven years until March 2015.
C. COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY STUDENT (Diploma course)
Fields of Study:
Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Information, Communication and Network Engineering, Materials Engineering, Architecture and Civil Engineering, Maritime Engineering and Others Fields i.e. International Communication, Management Information Engineering may have difficulties in finding colleges of technology capable of accepting them.
Eligibility:
- Born between April 2, 1986 and April 1, 1991.
- Those who are ready to study the Japanese language and receive education in Japanese language.
- For Fiji Citizen:
Those who have passed Fiji School Leaving Certificate with over 70% average marks, having passed in subjects relevant to the area of study. - For Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu Citizens:
Those who have passed year 12 external examination in their respective country with good marks.
Term of Scholarship:
Four years from April 2008 including the one-year preliminary instruction in the Japanese language, except for those majoring in Maritime Engineering, whose term of scholarship is four and half years.
D. PROFESSIONAL TRAINING STUDENT (Certificate course)
Fields of Study:
Civil Engineering, Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Telecommunication, Nutrition, Infant Education, Secretariat Studies, Hotel management, Tourism, Fashion, Dress Making, Design, Photography, etc.
Eligibility:
- Born between April 2, 1986 and April 1, 1991.
- Those who are ready to study Japanese language and receive education in Japanese language.
- For Fiji Citizen:
Those who have passed Fiji School Leaving Certificate with good results. - For Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu Citizens:
Those who have passed year 12 external examination in their respective country with good marks.
Term of Scholarship:
Three years from April 2008 including the preliminary instruction in the Japanese language. If a scholarship grantee graduates from a professional training college and is admitted to a Japanese universities as a junior transferee, his/her term of scholarship may extended upon successful examination by MEXT provided that he/she has outstanding academic achievement that meets certain criteria.
NOTE:
- You can apply to only one course.

Application forms and further information can be obtained from the Embassy of Japan, 2nd Floor, Dominion House or GPO Box 13045, Suva (telephone: 3304-633) or through website: http://www.studyjapan.go.jp/en/toj/toj0302e.html. - Applicants who wish to receive application forms by mail must forward self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Embassy. It is important to specify which specific scholarship program you desire.
- Completed applications forms should either be sent or delivered to the Embassy by May 31, 2007. Late applications will not be considered. All the documents submitted will not be returned.
- Selected candidates for examination/interview will be notified by phone on the second week of June. Examination/Interview will be held at the Embassy of Japan, Suva at the end of June 2007.
- For Applicants in Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu
