Japanese Government Scholarships for Japanese Studies and Teacher Training in 2014

The Government of Japan offers “Japanese Studies Scholarship” and “Teacher Training Scholarship” to qualified Fiji Citizens for studying in Japan.

  1. Field of Study

Study/training is implemented only for university/training courses indicated in the pamphlets “Course Guidebook for Japanese Studies Students”.  The Course Guidebook can be accessed from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology website:

B.  Eligibility

a. Japanese Studies Scholarship:
(1) Age: Applicants must be born between April 2, 1984 and April 1, 1996.
(2) Academic Background: Applicants must be undergraduates at foreign (non-Japanese) universities majoring in fields related to the Japanese language or Japanese culture at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan.
(3) Japanese Language Ability: Applicants must have Japanese language ability sufficient for receiving education at a Japanese university in Japan.
(4) Term of Scholarship: The term is the period necessary to complete the accepting university’s study course, which should be within approximately one year from October 2014 (the starting month of the study course).

b. Teacher Training Scholarship:
(1) Age: Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 1979.
(2) Academic Background: Applicants must be graduate of universities or teacher training schools and have worked as teachers at elementary or secondary educational institutions or teacher training schools in their home countries for in principle five years in total, as of April 1, 2014. In-service university faculty members are not eligible.
(3) Japanese Language Ability: Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese. Applicants must be interested in Japan, and be willing to deepen the understanding of Japan after arriving in Japan.  Applicants must also have the ability to do research in Japanese and adapt to living in Japan.
(4) Term of Scholarship: The term is the period necessary to complete each university’s training course and should be between October 2014 (or the starting month of the study course) and March 2016.

C.  Selection Process
a. Application Deadline: 7 March 2014
b. Examination (Japanese Test for Japanese Studies Scholarship and English Test for Teacher Training Scholarship)and Interview: Middle of March 2014
c. Announcement of Primary Selection: End of March 2014
d. Announcement of Successful Candidates: End of May 2014
