:: Press ReleasesNew Classrooms and Teachers Quarters for Lawaki District School Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance to the rural education sector, which benefits Rural Educational Institutions in Fiji. The Lawaki District School will celebrate the opening of facilities that were funded under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) programme. The Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Kenro Iino will be at Lawaki District School on Friday, 27th August 2004 at 10.00 a.m. to officially open the two (2) classrooms and one (1) teacher’s quarters. Lawaki District School provides education from classes 1 to 8 to over 200 children from the six (6) surrounding villages in the Tailevu Province. The school had faced various problems, which include lack of classrooms resulting in over crowded classes, lack of office and library space, and lack of teachers’ quarters. The Government of Japan under the GGP scheme provided a grant of US$27,816.00 (approx. F$54,000.00) to the school to cover for the building materials costs for the 2 classroom block, a new teachers quarters and some school furniture. Japan’s assistance to the school is in keeping with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of prioritising projects that target the development of basic education in Fiji, particularly the rural education sector. The Government of Japan anticipates to assist more rural schools in the future. END. |
