:: Press ReleasesJapan funds Water Supply and School Projects in the Kingdom of Tonga The Government of Japan will provide funds totalling US$496,810.00 (approx. T$921,888.00) for eight (8) projects in the Kingdom of Tonga. The funding will be made available through the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme. Grant Contracts formalising Japan’s assistance will be signed by the representatives of the respective projects and H.E. Mr. Masashi Namekawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, at 03.00 p.m. on 14th December 2005 at the Tonga Reserve Bank in Nuku’alofa, the Kingdom of Tonga. The projects to be funded include upgrading of school facilities and improvement of village water supply scheme. A sum of US$84,907.00 (T$157,554.00) will be provided for the school upgrading project and US$411,903.00 (T$764,334.00) for the village water supply scheme. Details on the individual projects are as follows:
Japan’s assistance to these projects indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in the Kingdom of Tonga and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties between the governments and the people of the Kingdom of Tonga and Japan. |
