Japan Upgrades Police Network System

The Fiji Police Force has received a major boost with a donation of 41 computers worth US$57, 993 (approximately FJD$99, 000) from the Government of Japan. These much needed computers will help establish a crime database network system which would eventuate in an improved standard of services provided by the Fiji Police Force to the people of Fiji. The Ambassador of Japan, H. E. Kenro Iino, will present these computers to the Commissioner of Police, Mr Andrew Hughes at a handing over ceremony to be held at the Nabua Police Station at 10am on Wednesday 28 July 2004.

Once established the crime database network system will be utilised to analyse and monitor the frequency of the individuality and the nature of the crime committed in the respective police localities. The network will also further enhance the information dissemination aspect of the force by providing a voice and data exchange facility between the police stations.

Mr Konosuke Yamamuro, a Japanese national, who is attached to the Fiji Police Force under Japan's Senior Volunteer Programme will oversee the implementation of the network system with the Crime Statistics and GIS (Geographical Information System) Unit.

The Government of Japan hopes that the new technology will strengthen the Fiji Police Force's ability to provide heightened services to the people of Fiji. The donation has been extended under Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) programme, and it is another milestone in Japan's ongoing support and cooperation towards Fiji.
