Japan Provides Funds to School Projects and Savusavu Town Council

The Government of Japan will provide funding of US$228,266.00 (approx. F$379,000.00) to three (3) schools and Savusavu Town Council through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme.

The Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Kenro Iino and the representatives of the each recipient organisation will sign grant contracts to formalise Japan's funding at 10.00 a.m. on 28th July 2005 at the Embassy of Japan, Level 2 Dominion House, Thomson Street, Suva.
Details of each project are as follows:

1. Toko Bhartiya School
   A sum of US$35,072.00 (approx. F$58,000.00) will be provided for the construction of a three (3) classroom block and provision of school furniture to assist the school in solving the problem of classroom shortages. It is anticipated that each year about one hundred (100) students will directly benefit from this project upon its completion.
   
2. Mulomulo Secondary School Technical and Vocational Centre
   A sum of US$91,628.00 (approx.F$152,000.00) will be provided for the construction of a two (2) workshop building for the technical and vocational centre of the school. It is anticipated that upon completion, this project will provide learning facilities for technical and vocational students from the surrounding areas of Mulomulo, Solovi, Maigania, Yavuna, Nausori Highlands, Nawaka and Vatutu. An estimated total of 10,000 people are expected to benefit from this project.
   
3. Maigania Muslim Primary School
   A sum of US$24,907.00 (approx. F$41,500.00) will be provided for the construction of a computer room and a classroom for the school. It is anticipated that through this project the school will be able to provide computer literacy to students and solve the classroom shortage problem at the school. An estimated population of 500 is expected to benefit from this project.
   
4. Savusavu Town Council
   A sum of US$76,659.00 (approx. F$127,500.00) will be provided to purchase a backhoe/digger for the Savusavu Town Council. It is anticipated that through provision of the backhoe, the Savusavu Town Council will be able to better manage the drainage system, the roads and the rubbish dump site of the Savusavu Town. It is anticipated that about 3,100 people from the Savusavu Town area will benefit from this project.

Japan's assistance to these projects indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in Fiji Islands and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties between the governments and the people of Fiji Islands and Japan.
