Japan Provides New Classrooms to Toko Bhartiya School

The Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance to the education sector, which benefits educational institutions in Fiji. The Toko Bhartiya School will celebrate the opening of new facilities that were funded under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Masashi Namekawa will be at Toko Bhartiya School in Toko, Tavua on Wednesday, 23rd November 2005 at 11:30 a.m. to officially open a new school building with three (3) classrooms.

Toko Bhartiya School is a multiracial school providing education from classes 1 to 8 to over 670 students from the surrounding areas of Vatukoula and Tavua. The increasing number in student enrolment and the resettlement of cane farmers to the Toko area has led to the request for additional classrooms. As such, the Government of Japan provided funding to build the new facilities.

The Government of Japan under the GGP scheme provided a grant of US$35,072.00 (approx. F$58,000.00) to the school to cover the construction costs for the 3 classrooms block and the provision of new school furniture.

Japan’s assistance to the school is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of prioritising projects that target the development of basic education in Fiji. The Government of Japan anticipates assisting more educational institutions in the Pacific Region in future.
