Japan Provides Funds for Education Sector in Tuvalu

The Government of Japan has provided a new classroom building block and two (2) water tanks, worth US$24,905.00 (approximately A$32,000.00), to the Assemblies of God pre - school in Funafuti Island in Tuvalu.

The Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Kenro Iino will officially open the new building and hand over the new water tanks to the Assemblies of God pre - school on 20th July 2005 at 11.30a.m. The funds for the projects were made available through the Government of Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

It is anticipated that the new building block would provide a better learning and educating environment for the pre school students of the Favavau community in mainland Funafuti. Initially 30 pre school students and 40 households will directly benefit from this building structure. Thereafter as the pre school enrolment increases, more students would benefit from the new facilities. In addition, through the provision of new water tanks, the pre school will be able to secure hygiene water supply for the students and staffs.

Japan's assistance to this project indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in Tuvalu and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training and rural infrastructure. The Embassy of Japan hopes that this assistance will help further strengthen friendly ties between the governments and the people of Tuvalu and Japan.
