Japan Provides Funds for Education Sector and Community Water Supply Projects in Vanuatu

The Government of Japan is pleased to announce the approval of grants totalling US$198,495.00 for three (3) Primary School projects on Tanna Island and two (2) Water Supply Projects on Efate Island in Vanuatu.

Grant Contracts, formalizing Japan’s assistance, was signed between the recipient organisations and the Embassy of Japan on Friday 20th August 2004 in Vanuatu. The funds for the projects would be available under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) programme.

The details of the projects are as follows:

  1. Iatap Primary School
    Grant Amount: US$42,314.00
    Project: Construction and Furnishing of a Double Classroom Facility
  2. Lounahunu Primary School
    Grant Amount: US$42,314.00
    Project: Construction and Furnishing of a Double Classroom Facility
  3. Petros Primary School
    Grant Amount: US$42,314.00
    Project: Construction and Furnishing of a Double Classroom Facility
  4. Epau Community
    Grant Amount: US$20,320.00
    Project: Upgrading of water supply system
  5. Eton Community
    Grant Amount: US$51,233.00
    Project: Upgrading of water supply system

Japan's assistance to these projects indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in Vanuatu and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training and rural infrastructure. It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen friendly ties between the governments and the people of Vanuatu and Japan.
