Japan Funds for 3 Projects

The Government of Japan will provide grant aid funds totalling US$165,933 (approx. F$277,000) for the flood rehabilitation of Navua Hospital and the upgrading of facilities for 2 rural schools.

Grant Contracts formalizing Japan's assistance will be signed by Dr. Lepani Waqatakirewa, Chief Executive Officer for Ministry of Health, and school representatives, for the respective projects, and H.E.Mr. Kenro Iino, the Ambassador of Japan to Fiji, at 10:30am on Tuesday 6th July 2004 at the Embassy of Japan in Suva.
The funds will be made available under Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) programme.

Details on the individual projects are:

  1. Flood Rehabilitation of Navua Hospital-US$90,827(approx. F$150,000). The Navua Hospital will receive medical equipment to replace equipment destroyed by the flood in April this year.
  2. Upgrading of Saraswati Primary School-US$27,802(approx. F$47,000). The funds will contribute to the construction of a 2-classroom building.
  3. Upgrading of Chauhan Memorial School-US$47,304(approx. F$80,000). The funds will contribute to the construction of a 4-classroom building.

Japan's GGP programme has its priority areas of funding such as education, human welfare, basic health care, and environment conservation.
