Japan Continues Assistance for Education Sector in Tonga

The Government of Japan will provide a grant of US$81,490 to the Tonga Institute of Science and Technology for the construction of a building consisting of a classroom, two laboratories, a store room and a staff room. This grant will be in addition to the US$572,706 which Japan has provided for the funding of 13 education sector projects in the Kingdom of Tonga for the fiscal year 2003.

The grants made available under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects are part of an initiative by the Government of Japan to provide funding to 100 schools in the South Pacific Forum Island Countries over a three-year period from 2003 to 2005.

The recipients of the grants are as follows:

3. Houma Government Primary School – US$57,226
4. Kolovai Government Primary School – US$65,869
5. Matahau Government Primary School – US$38,392
6. Fua’amotu Government Primary School – US$51,099
7. Talafo’ou Government Primary School – US$62,456
8. Mu’a Government Primary School – US$27,034
9. Ha’alalo Government Primary School – US$38,392
10. Nukuleka Government Primary School – US$8,201
11. Toloa Government Primary School – US$8,201
12. Kanokupolu Government Primary School – US$11,357
13. Vava’u High School – US$62,704
14. Tonga Institute of Science and Technology – US$81,490
