:: Japan's Economic Cooperation between Japan and the Republic of Nauru

The two vital components of ODA programs to the Republic of Nauru are Grant Aid and Technical Cooperation.

Grant Aid

The Grant Aid program has been a major component of Japan’s ODA to Nauru. The threshold for grant aid eligibility is determined according to World Bank statistics and Nauru is above this threshold. However, Japan provides general grant aid to Nauru only for projects in the fisheries sector.

General Grant Aid

The following is a list of projects funded under Japan’s General Grant Aid program since 1991:

1998 Project for Improvement of the Community Boat Harbour at Anibare (approx. US$5.6 m)
This is the first provision of General Grant Aid to Nauru by the Government of Japan

Specific budgets for each country are not predetermined and projects in each country are judged on their individual merits.

Technical Cooperation

The areas covered under Technical Cooperation are very diversified and include such sectors as agriculture, fishery, industry, infrastructure and health. Technical Cooperation programs to Nauru are composed of the following:

  1. Acceptance of trainees: An average of 10 trainees have been accepted each year;
  2. Dispatch of experts: At present there are no experts working in Nauru.
  3. Development survey and development cooperation projects: Examples of these include studies on fisheries development and management, resources survey and health.
