Japan Provides Vaitupu Island with Cargo-handling Equipment
Thursday, 12th March 2009, 10.00 a.m.
- The Project for Provision of Cargo-Handling Equipment for Vaitupu Island (2008)
The Government of Japan will provide a sum of US$87,483.00 (approx. AUS$125,000.00) for procurement of a new hoist truck for Vaitupu island wharf in Tuvalu. The funding will be sourced from Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme.
The Grant Contract formalising Japan’s assistance was signed between the President of Vaitupu Kaupule, Mr. Silu Malaga, and His Excellency Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Tuvalu on 12th March, 2009 at the Embassy of Japan, Suva, Fiji Islands.
Vaitupu is one of the many outer islands in Tuvalu that lacks proper wharf facilities to accommodate bulk cargo handling services at the Vaitupu Island wharf effectively. The new hoist truck will help ease the loading and unloading of cargo from vessels calling in. The new hoist truck will also supplement the transportation needs of people in Vaitupu and, will greatly assist the Council in unloading and carting heavy building materials for upgrading works mainly for public infrastructure.
The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. Japan’s assistance to these projects indicates its commitment to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of the people in Tuvalu and is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at grassroots level. It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties between the governments and the people of Japan and Tuvalu.
