Japan Offers Assistance to Tuvalu Electricity Cooperation

Thursday, 13th September 2007

The Government of Japan provides assistance worth US$85,964 (approx AU$103,870) to Tuvalu Electricity Cooperation through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme.

The First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan, Mr Tatsushi Matsuo, on behalf of His Excellency Masashi Namekawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Tuvalu and the General Manager for Tuvalu Electricity Cooperation, Mr Mafalu Lotolua, will sign grant contract to formalise Japan’s funding on Funafuti Island.

The provision of the fund is offered by the Government of Japan through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme in view of the need for an economical, reliable and environment friendly power supply to stimulate growth and development. This project will supplement diesel power generation in collaboration with the e8 project led by Kansai Electric Power Cooperation of Japan, reducing the economical and social costs of producing electricity in the long term.

The solar power generation project for Tuvalu would facilitate sustainable energy development in the Pacific region as a pilot model for a grid-connected solar power system. In addition, the renewable energy utilization project can be seen as a symbolic message to the world, especially the countries that could become an unwitting victim of global warming.

It is hoped that this token of friendship and goodwill extended to the Government and the people of Tuvalu from the Government and people of Japan will serve to further strengthen the cooperative relations and the friendship ties between people of Tuvalu and Japan.
