Message from Ambassador Tajima

Ambassador TAJIMA
I am Hiroshi TAJIMA, and I have assumed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Fiji in December 2025 with concurrent accreditation to Tuvalu. Although this is my first time to visit Tuvalu, I am deeply honoured to serve as Ambassador to the country blessed with beautiful lagoons and atolls and warm-hearted people. I look forward to engagement with you all.

At EXPO2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, I was impressed by the great interest shown in Tuvalu’s exhibits, including traditional ceremonial tools and various local products. I was also moved to see an entire wall filled with messages of encouragement from visitors expressing their support for Tuvalu, which is facing the impacts of sea-level rise.

The year 2025 marks the 46th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Tuvalu in 1979. During this period, cooperation between our two countries has progressed across a wide range of fields, including infrastructure, energy, education and health and medical services. In July 2024, Hon. Mr. Feleti Teo, Prime Minister of Tuvalu, visited Japan for his attendance to the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10), and a Japan-Tuvalu Summit Meeting was held. During the meeting, it was confirmed that Japan would support Tuvalu in submarine cable project, and decided to provide equipment to strengthen cyber security capacity of Tuvalu. In addition, both leaders discussed a new vessel that was under construction in Japan and would contribute to improvement of transport services in Tuvalu as well as both countries’ efforts to counter climate change. They also affirmed their commitment to further developing their strong cooperative relationship.

In addition to my role as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, I also serve as Permanent Representative of Japan to the Pacific Islands Forum. Japan strongly supports the "2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent," which outlines the PIF's priority areas and its desired future by 2050, and Japan is steadily implementing the commitments made at the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10) held in 2024. Japan will continue to collaborate with Tuvalu and other Pacific Island Countries towards PALM11, which is scheduled to take place in 2027.

Ensuring the safety and security of Japanese visitors is the embassy's utmost priority. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of visitors and tourists has been gradually increasing. To ensure that you can enjoy your stay, business trips, and travels in Tuvalu with peace of mind, please do not hesitate to contact the Embassy of Japan if you have any questions or encounter any difficulties.
