Speech by H. E. Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Vanuatu on the Occasion of the Handing-over Ceremony for the Project for Improvement of Port Vila Main Wharf
10.00 a. m. 10th May, 2010 Port Vila, Republic of Vanuatu.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is my honour to represent the Government of Japan in today’s handing over ceremony for the Port Vila Main Wharf improvement project. First of all, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu for the arrangement of today’s occasion and the warm hospitality extended to me and my colleague this morning.
The Government of Japan donated approximately 1.8 billion Vatu for an overhaul of the main wharf facilities to as it stands in front of us today, in addition to the new pilot boat handed over to the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu earlier, with another new tug boat due to arrive soon.
It is hope that this project will enable prompt handling of cargo and provide better port services for the visitors. The project will also help to secure safer operation of vessels and will strengthen search and rescue and fire fighting functions. This improvement of facilities at the Port will ensure full compliance with global maritime standards.
Japan has been a very active development partner in this region with its Grant Aid scheme designed in line with Japan’s ODA policy to provide technical cooperation and necessary funds to establish new and upgrade existing facilities for economic and social progress in the areas of economic infrastructure, rural development, education, health and environment. For instance, Japan has appropriated a total of more than 120 million US dollars since 1977 to Vanuatu for projects such as Sarakata River Hydroelectric Power station, upgrade of ring road and bridges in Efate Island.
This project is another evident manifestation of Japan’s commitment to Vanuatu’s economic development.
Before concluding, I wish to take this opportunity to thank the Japanese contractor Penta-Ocean Construction Company Limited and Consultant, ECOH Corporation, for the outstanding workmanship displayed. I also wish to thank officials of the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu, for their cooperation and assistance rendered to the Embassy, JICA office and the contractors. I hope this project will contribute to further strengthen the cordial relationship between our two countries.
The funding of this project is a strong testimony of the Government of Japan’s commitment to Vanuatu and I am convinced that the people of Vanuatu will make the best use of these new facilities.
