Japan Provides Funding for GGP projects in Nauru

Friday, 29th February 2008, Time 7:40 a.m.

The Government of Japan provides assistance to the people of the republic of Nauru under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme. The people of Nauru witnessed the official handing-over of a community water supply project and a refurbished fire station funded by Japan with a total grant of US$160,640.

The Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Nauru, His Excellency Mr. Masashi Namekawa, officially handed-over the refurbished fire station and the new water supply system for the people of Nauru at the fire station in Yaren district on Friday, 29th February, 2008.

Details of the project are as follows:

The Project for Community Water Supply in Nauru Island
It is the first GGP project in Nauru that was funded by Japan, which provides 45 new water tanks, worth US$75,829.00 (approx. AUS$98,000.00), to the communities of Nauru, in an effort to assist the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning’s plans to alleviate the problem of severe water shortage in Nauru. The new water tanks will help ease the chronic water shortage situation in Nauru and will help the people of Nauru to access fresh water promptly for drinking and other daily activities.

The Project for Rehabilitation of Fire Station
The Government of Japan provides a sum of US$84,811.00 (approx. AUS$92,965.00), for renovation works and expansion of the fire station in Yaren district in Nauru. The fire station in Yaren is only one stronghold in Nauru which provides services to stop the fire, in order to save properties and precious lives. Based on circumstances, the Government of Japan decided to provide funding assistance for renovation works and expansion of the fire station for efficient fire services to save lives and properties during times of emergency.

The funding for these projects is in line with Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level and is sourced from Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme. This programme is specially designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. It is hoped that this assistance will help to further strengthen the friendly ties currently enjoyed by the governments and the people of Japan and the Republic of Nauru.
