The Handing Over of Waste Management Equipment for the Project for “Project for Sustainable Waste Management and Soil Production” funded under the Government of Japan’s Economic Social Development Programme (ESDP).

On 22 November 2025, H.E Mr. Rokuichiro MICHII, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Nauru handed over the last batch of machineries which includes two garbage trucks and two waste can/plastic compressor to the Government of Nauru funded under the Government of Japan’s Economic Social Development Programme (ESDP) signed in 2021.
The Government of the Republic of Nauru received 200million Japanese Yen (app. AU$2.5million) for the procurement of equipment and machinery under Japan’s Economic Social Development Programme. The equipment and machinery will be used by the Department of Waste Management of the Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation collect, sort and separate waste that are dumped to the landfill. The annual tonnage of waste dumped on the landfill is estimated to around 9,000 tonnes. About 53 % (4,770mt) of this are green, cardboard and wood waste that can be processed and composted to produce organic soil for agriculture purposes.
Through this project, Japan has been able to provide the following machineries: hydraulic excavator (1X), Wheel loader (1X), woodchipper (2X), Chainsaws (3X), garbage truck (2X), and waste can/plastic compressor (2X)
Mr. Dextor Bretchfield, Chief Executive Officer for Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation expressed Nauru’s appreciation of Japan’s continuous support and highlighted that the project is greatly aligned to Nauru national development objectives.
