Handing Over Ceremony for “The Project for the Development of Solar Power System for Kiribati Humanitarian Warehouse” under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.
2025/8/28

On 28 August 2025, in the presence of His Excellency Taneti Maamau, President of the Republic of Kiribati, Mr. Rokuichiro MICHII, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Fiji (Permanent Representative of Japan to the PIF), and Mr. Hirotsugu IKEDA, Charge d'affaires of Japan to the Republic of Kiribati officially handed over a solar power system to the National Disaster Management Office of Kiribati (NDMO).
Kiribati, with its extremely low elevation, is one of the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. To strengthen its capacity for humanitarian response during emergencies, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan are working together to advance the Pacific Humanitarian Warehousing Initiative. As part of this initiative, Japan has taken the lead in installing solar power systems for the warehouse. This effort was carried out under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), specifically through the “Kiribati Humanitarian Relief Supplies Warehouse Solar Power Development Project.” The project was funded with a grant of AUD 248,000 from the Government of Japan. The newly installed solar panel system is expected to enable the prompt delivery of essential humanitarian supplies in the event of natural disasters or other emergencies.
Mr. MICHI conveyed his deep gratitude to all those involved in the project and remarked "I am confident that this project will not only strengthen Kiribati’s emergency response capacity and help address power outages through renewable energy, but also deepen the bonds of friendship between the Government and peoples of Kiribati, our donor partners, and Japan".
