Japan Handed-over the project for Improvement of Power Generation in Sarakata Hydroelectric Power Station in the Republic of Vanuatu
Embargo: Monday, 25th May 2009, 3.00 p.m.
The Government of Japan continues to provide grant assistance for improvement of basic infrastructure facilities in the Republic of Vanuatu. Today, the people of Vanuatu witnessed the official handing-over of the upgraded Sarakata River Hydroelectric Power Station. The funding of this major project in Vanuatu was made available through Japan’s General Grant Aid Scheme.
The Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Vanuatu, H.E. Yutaka Yoshizawa was present in Luganville, South Island on Monday, 25th May 2009, at 3.00 pm to officially hand-over the improved Sarakata River Hydroelectric Power Station that will ensure an economical, reliable and a sustainable power supply to stimulate further economic growth and development.
A grant of JPY 1,280 million (approx. 1,220 million vatu) was made available to the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu for improvement of Sarakata River Hydroelectric Power Station through its Official Development Assistance (ODA). Since the inception of Japan’s ODA scheme to Vanuatua in 1989, Japan has provided approximately 10 billion vatu to various projects under its General Grant Aid and GGP schemes around Vanuatu, and among these are Sarakata River Hydroelectric Power Station and Improvement of Port Vila main wharf projects with total funding of approximately 2,890 million vatu.
The Sarakata River Hydroelectric Power Station generated around 70 percent of total power supply and with the growing demand in Luganville and renewed dependence on diesel power generation to meet the maximum power demand made it difficult for Vanuatu to upgrade the Hydroelectric Power Station with its own budget. The main purpose of this grant assistance was to improve Sarakata River Hydroelectric Power Station by installing hydraulic turbine generators as an environment-friendly mean to produce economical electricity for Vanuatu’s needs.
This grant aid is in line with Japan’s objective to provide sustainable and constructive support for the development of projects that contribute to the improvement of essential infrastructural facilities and, thereby, promote socio-economic development and better people’s livelihood.
