Handing Over Ceremony for GGP Projects in the Republic of Nauru
By H. E. Mr. Masashi Namekawa, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Nauru, 29 February, 2008, Nauru
It is my great pleasure to represent the government and people of Japan in today’s official handing-over ceremony of Japan’s first two projects to Nauru funded under its GGP programme. I am thankful to you for the kind hospitality and the warm welcome accorded to me this morning. Today’s ceremony is a milestone in the history of our two counties. The projects for rehabilitation of this fire station and the new water supply system for the people of the Republic of Nauru will further strengthen the friendship that exists between the people and Government of Japan and Nauru.
Japan prioritises its funding assistance to projects that is in line with its Official Development Assistance policy of promoting development at the grassroots level and is sourced from Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme. This programme is specially designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure.
It is believed that well-resourced fire stations prove to better facilitate and expedite fire rescue services during times of emergency and, thus, the people of Nauru will be able to spend their daily lives with less anxiety. Fire stations provide their services not only to stop fire, but also save properties and, more importantly, save precious lives of people.
The communal water tanks project is the first GGP funding assistance from the Government of Japan. Human survival is dependent on water and access to clean and safe water is a basic human need. These new water tanks will ensure regular supply of safe water for drinking and for other daily activities.
I commend the people for their patience all along and congratulate you all for your dedicated efforts in completing these projects successfully. I am certain that the authorities responsible for the fire station and the water supply will take necessary and appropriate care to maintain the facilities for the future generations.
In conclusion, Honourable Minister, it is my hope that this undertaking from the Government and the people of Japan will reaffirm our continued friendship with the Republic of Nauru and its people and with these few words, may I officially hand-over these facilities to the Government and the people of Nauru.
