The Government of Japan continues to provide funding assistance for development of educational facilities in schools throughout Fiji. The communities of Kasavu in the Province of Cakaudrove, and, Korotolutolu in Seaqaqa, Labasa, will be celebrating the handing-over ceremony of upgraded classrooms and new toilet blocks funded by the Government of Japan under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The Third Secretary at the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Yoshisuke Kondoh will represent the Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa in the official handing-over ceremony of the upgraded facilities at Kasavu Primary School at 12.00 p.m. on Thursday, 8th  and at 11.30 a.m. on Friday, 9th September, 2011 at Korotolutolu Primary School.

Details for the Project are as follows:

1.         The Project for Upgrading of Kasavu Primary School
Japan provided funding assistance of F$138,000.00 for general renovation works on the colonial style wooden school building at Kasavu Primary School. The School was established in 1928 and accommodates 87 children from nearby settlements and communities. This project will ensure necessary upgrading works is undertaken by the school management on the existing deteriorated buildings which were erected during the colonial era. In addition, the new toilet block, also funded under this project, will ease the pressure on present toilet facilities, which has been deteriorating due to its heavy usage, and also improve the pupil-toilet ratio at the School.  The renovated building complex will not only instil confidence among the community, but also provide the children of Kasavu a better place for learning and achieving academic excellence.

2.         The Project for Upgrading of Korotolutolu Primary School
The Government of Japan provided F$164,893.20 for renovation of classrooms, upgrading water supply system and construction of a new seven-pan toilet block at Korotolutolu Primary School in Seaqaqa, Labasa. The school, which was established in 1970, is located 60 kilometres from Labasa and presently accommodates 50 children. The renovation works will improve school’s deteriorated facilities and create an environment conducive for learning. In addition, the new toilet block will improve sanitation and regular water supply from the new water supply system will make this project very meaningful.

Japan believes education is the key to socio-economic development and hopes to continue assisting schools in Fiji through its Grant Assistance for Human Security Projects Programme (GGP).
