The Government of Japan continues to uphold its commitment to upgrade basic educational facilities for grassroots people in Fiji despite massive loss and destruction caused by the March Tsunami in Japan. The community of Naidovi in Sigatoka will witness the official handing-over of the newly constructed Library with new set of furniture and walkway funded by the Government of Japan under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The First Secretary at the Embassy, Mr. Osamu Nakamura will represent the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Fiji, H.E. Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa, at Naidovi Primary School to officially hand-over the new library with furniture and walkway at 11.00 a.m. on Thursday, 11th August, 2011.

The Government of Japan provided F$92,000.00 for construction of a library, walkway and provision of furniture to establish a well-resourced library at Naidovi Primary School in Sigatoka. The school was established in 1926 and presently accommodates 342 children. The school lacked library facilities and made a formal request to the Embassy for funding assistance to construct a library with provision of proper book shelves, long tables and benches. The new library will encourage better utilisation of library services and become a fully-fledged resource centre for students to do research and assignments. It will also promote quality time management via learning through reading during free time.

Japan believes education is the key to socio-economic development and hopes to continue assisting schools in Fiji through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects programme (GGP). The Government of Japan through its GGP scheme is able to deliver its aid programme directly to the needy and underprivileged grassroots people to promote equality, particularly, in the areas of education, health and rural infrastructure.
