Japan Provides Funding Assistance for Four Projects in the Republic of Vanuatu

The Government of Japan provided a total funding of 43.8 million VT for five different projects in the Republic of Vanuatu through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.

The Grant Contracts, formalizing Japan’s assistance, was signed between Mr. Yukihiro Tsujimura, the Second Secretary at the Embassy of Japan representing the Ambassador of Japan, H.E Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa and Mr. Roy Obed, Acting Director General of the Ministry of Education, and Mr. Mark Bebe, The Ministry of Health. The Signing Ceremony will be held on Monday 28th March, 2011 at 13:30 hrs (Education Projects) and 15:00 hrs (Health Project) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Republic of Vanuatu.

Japan’s assistance to these projects indicates its commitment to contribute to the improvement of the living standards and welfare of people in the Republic of Vanuatu and, is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy of promoting development at the grassroots level. The GGP programme is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure. Japan has approved nine projects with a total value of approximately 65.4 million VT under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for GGP Programme in the Japanese fiscal year 2010, namely April 2010 and March 2011.

A total of 85 projects, valued at 407 million VT, have been funded under this program from 1996 to 2010 in the Republic of Vanuatu.

It is hoped that this continuous assistance will reaffirm the friendly ties currently enjoyed by the governments and the peoples of Japan and Vanuatu.
